Description: Jan Michael Looking Wolf honored with three ISMA Nominations. A Kalapuya Native of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde with mixed Irish heritage that lives near his reservation in Western Oregon , Jan Michael Looking Wolf is an accomplished recording artist with 15 CDs and 2 DVDs recorded on various record labels, earning 33 National Award Recognitions and a top ten ranking in the new age charts. In 2008, he won Native Flutist of the Year at both the Native American Music Awards (NAMMYS) and Indian Summer Music Awards (ISMA). This was a first ever that a flutist won both in the same year. A Finalist in three catagories, Jan Michael leads this year’s ISMA nominations. In an interview from the studio, he says, “I appreciate this honor and am blessed to be included with the other nominees, all of them so very talented. Just being able to make music in a positive way is a tribute to my culture. Every day is a gift, every song a story to tell, every breath a way of giving thanks.” This last year has been very busy, with three separate recording projects released: His new Native American Flute CD, Diversity is named as a finalist for Best Flute Recording at this year’s ISMA. Diversity is a sequel to the 2008 Award Winning solo flute CD, “Unity”. It contains a mixture of masterful solo flute arrangements and gentle acoustic accompaniment. Other nominees this year include, Eagle and Hawk, JJ Kent, Mary Youngblood, Indigenous, Gabriel Ayala, Arvil Bird, Golana’, Randy Granger, Rez Hogs, Team rez Official, Zane, Johnny Lipford, Jan Seiden, Jana Moshonee, Kevin Locke, Black Lodge, Elk Soldier, Northern Cree, Tha Tribe, Thunder Hill, Cherokee National Youth Choir, Eli Secody, and Kevin Yazzie. Length: 1 hr Description: Steven Grounds, from the Navajo, Uchi, Creek, and Seminole tribes was was born in Pawnee, Oklahoma on October 29th, 1977. He spent most of his childhood and high school years in the neighboring town of Stillwater, Oklahoma. Steven recieved his Bachelors degree in American Indian Studies at Haskell Indian Nations University in 2004 after transferring from Tabor College in Hillsborough, Kansas. Steven now resides in Phoenix, Arizona where he continues to work on designs for t-shirts, posters, stickers, fine art, and cutom made artwork. Some current projects Steven has collaborated with include Brian Frejo of Cutlure Shock Camp, Smoke/Native Amerikaz Most Wanted CD artwork, Thomas "Thunderkick" Longacre, a Native Mixed Martial Artist and World Combat League fighter, Mic Titan, a Native MC in Phoenix, and Levi Blackwolf of Wolfn Photographies. As a high schooler he won the State Superintendent's Artist Award given out to the top 50 high school artists in the state of Oklahoma. He continued to study art in college but mainly focused on basketball as he played four years of Varsity for Haskell Indian Nations University. The current campaign of Native Evolution is in the beginning phase and Steven hopes to promote awareness and open dialog about what it represents to Native people to continue in preserverance of culture and identity in an ever changing world.
